Establishing Evacuation Procedures for Chairs

As the owner of a business, whether it is a corporate structure of a medical facility, establishing procedures that work toward the safety of all is imperative. These regulations must not guide only the general public, but also those who have special needs. In the event of an emergency, some individuals may not have the ability to walk down the stairs to safety. They need to sit in emergency stair chairs. Creating rules that govern the safety of these individuals is especially important for emergencies that preclude the use of the elevator. Companies should first make sure that all individuals know the location of evacuation chair. Some people may have these chairs in these rooms, but that is not always the case.

Not only do people need to know where these emergency evacuation chairs are located, but they need to know how to get them. If their mobility is limited when it comes to the stairs, they may struggle to walk to the location of the chairs with alacrity as well. Therefore, certain people need to have leadership roles when it comes to efficiently providing the evacuation chair to the individual or the individuals who need them. Companies and health care facilities may decide that the best course of action is to keep the chairs in the rooms with the employees or the patients.

Some sets of stairs are more conducive to the use of such chairs than other ones are, and all involved personnel should know where the location of those stairwells are. It is not enough to simply verbally relay this information to people in a meeting, instructions should be posted that point to the location of these stairwells and provide directions to them. Designating names for the stairwells, such as Stairwell A and Stairwell B, as opposed to simply referring to them as “the stairwell at the end of the hall” or “the stairwell to the left” is wise. Once leaders have determined the location of these stairwells and publicized the information to others, they should run practice drills.

These drills help people to actually put the skills that they need into play. In the event that an emergency situation arises, it won’t be the first time that they need to follow this plan and routine. A practice drill also allows individuals to see what problems might come into fruition and to work on creating reasonable solutions to prevent life-threatening issues should a real emergency arise.
